A pump is a machine that transports or pressurizes fluids. It transfers the mechanical energy of a prime mover or other external energy to a liquid, increasing the liquid's energy. Pumps are mainly used to transport liquids such as water, oil, acids and alkalis, emulsions, suspensions, and liquid metals. They can also transport liquid-gas mixtures and liquids containing suspended solids.
