Types of Sand Castings

The sand castings produced by our company mainly include the following types:

Cast Iron Sand Casting Components

Cast iron sand casting components are metal parts created by pouring molten iron (gray, ductile, or malleable) into compacted sand molds. This cost-effective process produces versatile, durable parts like engine blocks, pipes, and machinery bases, ranging from small to massive sizes.

Gray Iron Green Sand Casting Product

Gray Iron Green Sand Casting Product is a durable metal component made by pouring molten gray iron into a mold made of compressed "green" sand (a moist mixture of sand, clay, and additives).

Metal Sand Casting Parts

Metal sand casting parts are metal components—commonly iron, steel, aluminum, or bronze—created by pouring molten metal into a sand-based mold. Known for flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and suitability for large or complex shapes, this process uses patterns to create molds, often in two halves (cope and drag).

Advantages of Sand Castings

Nearly Any Alloy

Sand castings can be readily produced in nearly any ferrous or non-ferrous alloy. Some other casting processes will melt and pour super-alloys in a vacuum, but that is not typically done as a sand casting.

Low Tooling Cost

The relatively low cost of tooling makes sand casting a process of choice for lower volume needs. Patterns do wear so the material selected for the pattern (typically wood, plastic, or metal) will depend on the expected usage quantity of the part being produced.

Versatile – Size, Weight, Shape

Sand castings can be produced in weights from ounces to 200+ tons. Through the use of cores, internal structures can be cast in place. Shaped parts rely mainly on the imagination of the designer.

Any Quantity

Because the tooling cost can be minimal, sand casting may be appropriate for a single piece run. Alternatively, there are automotive components that are produced using this process, so it may also be used in high volume applications.

Timing

The casting process itself may be quicker than some others, like investment casting, but it is important to consider the post-casting processes like machining that may be required when computing total lead times.

Different Materials for Sand Castings

Aluminum

Aluminium is one of the most commonly used sand casting materialsdue to its mechanical properties. It has a high strength to weight ratio, low density, corrosion resistance and castability.

Bronze

Bronze, an alloy of copper and tin, is a common material for sand casting. The sand casting of bronze depends on its different alloys, which are based on the ratio of copper to tin or the presence of other elements such as aluminium, zinc, nickel and iron.

Brass

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc which, due to its high elemental content, is resistant to rust and corrosion. Brass does not contain iron or iron oxide. Brass has good electrical conductivity and tensile strength.

Zinc

Zinc is a strong material with high hardness, corrosion resistance and castability. In addition, the strength and hardness of zinc makes it easy to produce thinner walled parts after alloying.

Lead

Lead was one of the most commonly used materials for sand casting by the Romans. It is heavy and resistant to corrosion.

Copper

Copper is an expensive, strong, heavy material known for its electrical and thermal conductivity. Because copper does not rust and is highly malleable, it is suitable for sand casting, such as plumbing fixtures.

Iron

Iron is commonly used in sand casting due to its fluidity and low volumetric/linear shrinkage. However, its poor mechanical properties, high compressive strength and low tensile strength make it unsuitable for parts with complex shapes or asymmetric structures.

Mild Steel

Mild steel has a lower carbon content (0.15% to 0.30%), which gives it greater ductility and malleability.Mild steel is widely used because of its low cost and ease of casting.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel’s corrosion resistance, durability and strength make it a popular choice for sand casting. It also has a low coefficient of thermal expansion, which improves precision, high tolerances and dimensional stability.

Equipment Required for Sand Castings

Sand mixing equipment

Sand mixing machine is used to mix sand (special modeling soil) and appropriate amount of clay evenly to prepare sand mold materials suitable for casting.

Mold making equipment

Engraving machine, used to make molds based on samples or drawings provided by customers. Engraving machines can engrave materials such as wood, plastic sheets, and metal blocks to create precise molds.

Core making equipment

Oven, used for firing cores. For castings with internal cavities, a core needs to be made to fill the cavity in the mold. In addition, materials such as aluminum core boxes and coated sand are also required.

Molding equipment

Molding machine, used to compress the mixed sand material and shape it around the mold. The molding machine can greatly improve the molding efficiency and reduce the workload of workers.

Melting Equipment

Electric furnace, used to melt metal. The size and power of the electric furnace are determined by production needs.

Pouring equipment

Ladle, used to contain and transfer molten metal. There are large and small ladles for molten iron to facilitate the transfer of molten metal from the electric furnace to the mold.

Cleaning equipment

Sandblasting machine, used to clean sand and impurities on the surface of castingsand perform surface roughening.

FAQ

Q: Is sand casting a mold or mould?

A: Sand casting molds are one-time use, made by mixing sand and a binder. Metal is static poured into the mold, solidifies, then the mold is broken to remove the casting. Within sand casting, there are 4 types of processes: green sand, nobake, coldbox, and shell.

Q: What is the least expensive and easiest mold of sand casting?

A: The sand mold is in an uncured state as the metal is being poured. Sand casting using green sand is quick and inexpensive since the sand can be reused. The downside is that the sand is a soft mold and can collapse or shift during casting, leaving an unusable cast.

Q: What do I need to start sand casting?

A: Silica Sand.
Mold of object.
Some type of kiln/oven to melt the metal you will be using.
Ladle to pour molten metal.
Block of solid metal to melt.
Hammer or some other object to crack the sand mold after metal solidifies.

Q: Why is sand casting still used?

A: Sand casting remains a cornerstone of heavy-duty industrial manufacturing, providing unmatched benefits in durability, cost efficiency, and design flexibility. Its enduring popularity stems from adaptability and effectiveness across demanding industrial applications, from automotive to aerospace.
