Precision Casting Stainless Steel Pump Body
The shell making is a very critical process during investment casting because it influences the precision accuracy of the final castings. The quality of the shell is directly related to the roughness and dimensional tolerance of the final casting.
Stainless Steel Investment Casting Pump Housing
Stainless steel investment casting pump housing is a high-precision, corrosion-resistant component produced via the "lost-wax" process, ensuring complex internal geometries, smooth surfaces, and high dimensional accuracy for hydraulic applications.
Stainless Steel Investment Castings
Stainless steel investment castings are "corrosion-resistant" when used in liquid environments and vapors below 1200°F (650°C) and "heat-resistant" when used above this temperature.




Design Flexibility for Complex Parts
One of the most significant advantages of investment casting is its ability to produce parts with intricate geometries. Internal cavities, undercuts, thin walls, and sophisticated contours are easily achievable. This makes the process ideal for parts that would be difficult—or even impossible—to manufacture with traditional machining or sand casting techniques.
Exceptional Surface Finish
The smooth ceramic mold used in investment casting results in a naturally clean surface finish. Typical parts achieve finishes in the 125 RMS range or better, reducing or eliminating the need for secondary finishing operations.
Tight Dimensional Tolerances
Investment casting achieves outstanding accuracy, often holding tolerances within ±0.005 inches per inch. This precision minimizes the need for costly machining, while also ensuring that parts consistently meet design specifications—critical in regulated industries such as defense and energy.
Material Versatility
Another major advantage is the ability to cast a wide range of alloys. Alcon Industries specializes in pouring stainless steels, cobalt and nickel-based superalloys, aluminum, and specialty metals. This flexibility allows customers to select materials based on performance criteria such as heat resistance, corrosion resistance, wear properties, and mechanical strength.

Create and Assemble the Wax Patterns
There are three basic routes to delivering the precision wax patterns that are the starting point for investment casting. For decorative items and one-off products such as jewelry or technical items for which precision is a lower priority, it is common to hand carve the wax master to the desired dimensions/shape.
Mount the Wax Patterns
Attach a feeder structure consisting of a sprue and channel to the part to allow the fill to be successful. Attach the part and feeder structure to a casting board that forms the structure to allow the flask (the completed cast tool) to stand securely.
Make a Mold Shell
A first immersion in the correctly formulated slurry will coat the surfaces of the pattern/sprue/support structure. Once the assembly is coated, it can be withdrawn and allowed to drip. Once drained, apply a layer of stucco—dry powder sprinkled all over to stabilize the first layer.


Remove the Wax
Bake the completed and dried flask to remove the wax and fully integrate the refractory coating. The supplier-recommended temperatures and durations for this stage are dependent on the type of material such as: water glass, clay, and silica.
Melt and Cast the Metal
Lift the crucible with tongs and pour the contents into the upper opening to the sprue. Fill/charging should continue until the entire structure is full. This is usually confirmed by the visible presence of molten metal in the upper vents, showing good flow through.
Finalize the Castings
When the cast has cooled, break away the refractory material without distorting the newly cast metal. In some cases, such as for simple and robust castings in stainless steel and bronze, this can be a vigorous and rapid process.
